The Battle for Your Identity

The Battle for Your Identity

Man or woman

Married or single

Parent or childless

Christian or non-religious

White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, etc

Democrat or Republican

Vaxxed or unvaxxed.

The list of labels we use and others use to describe ourselves is endless!

So, I ask you …

How do you describe yourself?

Do you know who you are?

Do you know why you exist?

How often do these questions enter your thoughts?

Do you have an answer when someone asks, “What are you good at?”

Do you have an answer for the questions I asked above?

Who or what do you seek for advice to figure it out?

There is a battle in the world for your identity. A noise that can be deafening in its unending flood coming at you day in and day out.

Everyone has an opinion on who you should be, how you should act, what to believe, and what should be important to you. How many have your best interest at heart when they impart their views of you, on you? Who is in it for their own gain? It can be confusing and overwhelming.

The battle for who you believe you are is a many-sided battle, and this war for you has been waging since the beginning of time.

There are those who want to strip you of your true self and replace it with a false, counterfeit version of who you are meant to be. And there is a Creator God who wants you to see yourself as you really are; who He created you to be.

Satan is God’s enemy, and as a daughter of the King of Kings, he makes you his enemy too. He would like nothing more than to get you to deny God, and deny who God says you are; to get you to deny your identity.

But we can choose to be vigilant and ask God for eyes to see the battles for our souls; the battles for who we believe we are.

One of the ways Satan attempts to take you away from God is by creating a false identity for you. He uses the struggles we have to create a counterfeit message  that gets broadcast, believed by a few, twisted, then spread further and further as truth.

If we aren’t grounded in the Word and stay connected to the Father, we can become confused and stray from the path marked out for us; which only leads to more unsettling confusion.

Satan will use the pressure to conform from others to attempt to get us to forget who we are and who we belong to. He will use his tactics to get us to question if what we believe is really true. The more he can get us to question what God says, the more he can gain a foothold into our beliefs.

But this doesn’t have to be your story! Ask for eyes that see, ears that hear, and a heart and mind that understand the truth.

What are some of the battles we are currently faced with? What are some areas Satan wants us to question?

The biggest question Satan wants us to ask is “how and why did I get here?”

Satan wants you to believe that you came to being as the result of a one-in-a-million accident. That some stuff was swirling around in space, collided, and the result of the collision was living beings. These beings then evolved and changed over a long period of time, and eventually humans became an outcome of all the shifting organisms.

Does this explanation give you much hope and purpose? If you are a product of chance, do you have a purpose? Are you meant to create your own purpose? Where do you start? What if you get it wrong?

God says you are created by Him, the Master Creator. He chose for you to exist as His beloved daughter. You are a descendant of Adam, who God formed from the earth and breathed His own breath into, and Eve, who was formed by a piece of Adam’s rib. You were created on purpose and you have a purpose. You can have hope and be encouraged when you remember that you are not an accident or a product of chance, but an on-purpose creation that has meaning and significance.

Another question Satan wants in our minds is our value. Because Adam and Eve disobeyed God (they had one job! Stay away from that tree!) mankind experienced a separation from God; we were sentenced to walk this earth minus the holy presence of God the Father that Adam and Eve enjoyed in the Garden.

Separation can make one feel unwanted, unloved, and unvalued. We feel cast-out at times because we were. However, God provided Jesus as our bridge to be able to come back into His presence. While on earth, His presence is carried in us as Holy Spirit; after death, our souls will dwell with Him in Heaven for eternity.

Want to know how valuable you are? God wants so deeply for you to know and experience His love, and for you to have an eternal home with Him, that He sent Jesus to Earth. And Jesus didn’t hesitate one second to do it!

Jesus gave up a throne in Heaven for a manger in a stable. He gave up streets of gold for the life of a carpenter. He chose to experience life as we know it, and be an example to us of how we should live on earth, instead of calling on the powers of Heaven to come down and clean up the mess. He chose to temporarily give up the praise of the angels for the ridicule of evil men who would seek to kill Him. He chose to be a servant and a nomad; a quiet yet outspoken man who came to reveal Himself to those who would see Him, and those who missed Him because they were so wrapped up in their own power and influence over society.

Jesus gave all this up and more, all so He could heap upon His shoulders, your and my sin. He was ridiculed, accused, denied, pursued, beaten, and given a criminal’s sentence. Our condemnation died with Jesus on the cross. Jesus became obedient to death so that you may have life. He rose on the third day to show you and I His rightful place, His power, His holiness, and that you and I can also conquer death by choosing Him.

Would Jesus give all this up, and go through all He did if you weren’t valuable? You carry a value you cannot fathom, sweet friend. Don’t allow anyone to take that away from you!

There are many lies about our identity that Satan twists and wants us to believe.

Satan says we have to be perfect in order to have value; Jesus says we are made perfect in Him.

Satan tells you to question your gender; God made you female.

Satan says to compare your life to others and see how you measure up; Jesus says to fix your eyes on Him because He more than measures up.

Satan says the definition of success is money, a nice house, cars, and recognition; Jesus says success is running with perseverance, the race marked out for you, fixing your eyes on Him, the author and perfecter of your faith. (Hebrews 12:1-2)

Satan says you need to be accepted by everyone in order to be acceptable; Jesus says we should look to Him, for He endured opposition from sinners, and not grow weary or lose heart. (Hebrews 12:3)

Satan says you should fear the law of your land as the ultimate authority; Jesus says He is King over all, and respect those in authority over you, though do not fear standing up against that which goes against the Word of God.

Satan says you don’t need people in your life, that you are just fine on your own; Jesus says He created you and I to be in community with one another. He created marriage, friendship, family, siblings, parents and children. We were never meant to live in isolation.

Satan says that when God tells wives to be submissive to their husbands, it means that the woman has no say, that she does not hold as much value as her husband, that she can not make any decisions on her own; Jesus says that He intends that husband and wife work as a team, with the husband being the leader of the household, just as Jesus is the leader of the Church. Jesus leads with love and with the best interests of you and I; husbands likewise are to lead their homes with love and the best interests of their family.

Satan says you must belong to the correct group of people, and the “correct” group will change with the generations; Jesus says “Just tell them you’re with me”, and that will never change.

Satan comes to kill and steal and destroy; Jesus comes to give you life, and give it abundantly.

What else is Satan lying to you about? What noise is he creating in the world that is battling for your attention and your belief in who you are?

Satan tells you lies through the world’s beliefs.

Jesus says you are a …

Chosen people

Royal priesthood

Holy nation

God’s special possession

Called out of darkness

One who declares His praises

Belonging to God

Who you believe is up to you, sweet friend.
